Behavioral Observation Audiometry (BOA) for developmental ages of 0 to 5 months: child's responses may consist of quieting, eye widening, startle, etc. Sounds of varying intensity are presented to the child via calibrated speakers or earphones. The sounds may consist of speech or music as well as specific frequencies that are critical to access (hear) the different sounds of speech. The audiologist looks for and records the child's responses to the softest sounds presented and plots them out on a graph called an audiogram.
A listening game that uses toys to maintain the child's attention and focus to the listening task. For example, the child holds a block, waits and listens for the sound. When the child hears the sound, they drop the block in a bucket. This is no different than raising one's hand in response to the sound, but the toys establish and maintains the child interested in the listening task for much longer than hand-raising alone. This "listening game" is demonstrated to the child by the audiologist, and once the child understands the game testing is underway.
Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss.
Tympanometry/ Impedance is a measure of the stiffness of the eardrum and thus evaluate middle ear function. This test can be helpful in detecting fluid in the middle ear, negative middle ear pressure, disruption of the ossicles, tympanic membrane perforation, and otosclerosis.
Speech Reception threshold (SRT) - One of the most basic measurements as the speech reception threshold. This test determines the lowest intensity level at which the patient can correctly identify 50% of common two-syllable words such as: baseball, airplane, mushroom. The SRT should be in close agreement with pure-tone threshold results. As a rule of thumb, the pure tone average or PTA should match the SRT, within 5 dB.
Eustachian Tube Functioning Test (ETF) - A functional and patent eustachian tube is necessary for ideal middle ear sound mechanics. A fully patent eustachian tube may not necessarily have perfect functioning, as is the case with the patulous eustachian tube or with mucociliary abnormalities. Testing of both eustachian tube patency and function are therefore important.
Speech Test- Speech audiometry has become a fundamental tool in hearing-loss assessment. In conjunction with pure-tone audiometry, it can aid in determining the degree and type of hearing loss. Speech audiometry also provides information regarding discomfort or tolerance to speech stimuli and information on word recognition abilities. In addition, information gained by speech audiometry can help determine proper gain and maximum output of hearing aids and other amplifying devices for patients with significant hearing losses and help assess how well they hear in noise. Speech audiometry also facilitates audiological rehabilitation management.
A successful hearing aid fitting is more than just selecting the correct device for your hearing needs. The hearing aids need to be properly fitted to your ears so that they provide the correct amount of amplification to maximize hearing aid benefit. Prior to fitting the hearing aids, our audiologist will conduct a thorough hearing test to measure the softest sound you can hear at different pitches and record the volume of sound that is uncomfortably loud for you. Based on these tests, our audiologist will know how much gain the hearing aid needs to provide in order to amplify soft sounds so they are audible and how much to compress loud sounds so that they are not uncomfortable.
Since I received my hearing aid last November, I have not misheard conversations. It is much more pleasant to understand what is being said!
